The Australian Connection

A Heatherlea Perspective

The Twelve Apostles on the 400 km Great Ocean Road between
Melbourne and Adelaide.

While judging dog shows in Australia, we had the opportunity to see a local obedience trial and while walking towards that trial, we saw two gorgeous English Cocker Spaniel dogs. Our guide knew the owner of the dogs and kennels and introduced us to her. From then on, we knew that we wanted to add this line to our own.

We waited almost two years for a puppy with the correct lineage but we couldn't get it so we decided to take one of their puppies from a more distant line. We then contacted our friends at Dutch Hill Kennels and they also wanted a puppy. Thus Doon and Walker came to Canada. They both turned out to be terrific specimens of the breed type and both have wonderful soft and loving temperaments.

In December of 2003, we got a call from Australia telling us that the original dogs we had seen near that obedience trial years before had just had a litter of 8 pups and were we interested. We and Dutch Hill both said yes and along came Watson and Yaraa. They were also gorgeous puppies and have already had a remarkable number of wins, considering their young age. While extraordinary in their conformation, their temperament keeps us young because both are filled with fire and love and are exuberant about sharing this with everyone they meet.

Since then, the sire in Australia has become a Grand Champion and the dam is well on her way to becoming a Grand Champion herself. We are naturally all very proud of these four young English Cocker Spaniel dogs.

World Travelers

Alone, four brave little puppies flew from Adelaide in South Australia to Sydney. From there they soared over the Pacific to Vancouver with a short stop in Honolulu. Finally they traveled over the Rocky Mountains and halfway across Canada to Winnipeg. That's a trip of about 10,500 miles and almost halfway round the world! They had great flights and terrific care along the way thanks to many dedicated people and the excellent services of Qantas and Air Canada. We thank them all. What incredible stories these dogs must tell their pups today!
